Don was my best mate through my teens and early 20's. I've never had a better mate. We hitch hiked to the Gold Coast and several other places up and down the coast and canoed down the Hawkesbury River while it was in flood, till we tipped over. The canoe was wedged a meter under water, stuck under tree roots, but Don just reached down and pulled it out. He was a great mate and we had lots of fun and adventures. A great teacher, friend and family man. His passing is a great loss to his family and friends, to whom my thoughts go out.

Never stopped thinking of you

I miss you sir. The only teacher to ever shake my hand, my last day of school and tell me you were proud. From the 8 girls in my group, i was one of the firtunate to make it almost to the end. I know i was never the perfect student, but hey, thats how we bnded, me being in your office at least once a week. I havent been at hills for almost 2 years now, and i still miss it. Mainly because of you.
I miss you Mr Mitchell. Not only an inspiration to me, but to every person that ever had the pleasure of knowing you.
Hope your partying hard up there.

You share the biggest star in the sky alongside my daddy.

My mate, my mentor...

I first met Don when I was green eyed student at Macquarie Boys High School in the mid 80's in year 7. Don was our Woodwork and PE teacher and had a instant impact on both myself and many of my friends lives. His ability to teach, be-freind, and just generally make you feel special was just awesome. The guy just had this energy that dragged everyone along.

Don then started weightlifting classes at school and a few of us signed up to join the fun :) i remember seeing two kids doing pull-ups on his extended arms while he just stood there, just amazing...I remember his no BS format and his humor.

After school, Don and I remained great friends where he often mentored me in my life's challenges, I remember helping him at various houses building retaining walls, painting, especially at Woronora. They were just the best of times...we were mates, and we could just hang out and do bloke stuff. Talk crap, laugh at own mistakes and smile...

Later as I married and started my own family Don was still there, he spoke at my wedding, he would help me move house, help me renovate my own place and just always be there for a chat. Ne never ever let me down....not ever....

As life changed and I lost my own mother and then my marriage Don was still there. He always had a different perspective, and a positive attitude that could make a one armed Baghdad bricklayer smile :)

The day of Don's death will live with me forever, as he shares that day with my daughters Birthday. Maybe he is now her guardian angel....

I miss you dearly mate, I remember talking to you only a few days prior to your death. Rest in Peace brother...
