Crash victim may have had heart attack
BY MEGAN DOHERTY
01 Feb, 2010 08:05 AM
A Mongarlowe man who used his retirement to work hard for the Braidwood community might have suffered a heart attack before his car crashed into a tree on the Kings Highway.

Barry Dowell, 75, was driving his four-wheel-drive east on the Kings Highway near Deloraine Lane when it crashed into a tree about 6pm on Friday. The accident happened just north of Braidwood within 50m of where a crash claimed the life of Murrumbateman teenager Jack Guy on New Year's Day.

NSW Police said Mr Dowell, who was the only person in the jeep, suffered multiple injuries and died at the scene.

A retired insurance broker originally from Sydney, Mr Dowell moved with his wife Carmel to their farm at Mongarlowe east of Braidwood six years ago when he retired. The couple had been married 47 years.

He is survived by his wife, three of their four children Mick, Trish and Peter and 10 grandchildren. Their daughter Maree died of breast cancer six years ago.

Peter Dowell said his Mudgee-born father did a lot of work for the local community including with the St Vincent de Paul Society and Braidwood Care. While the family had been told he might have suffered a heart attack, Mr Dowell said they were surprised, because his father was fit. ''He chopped firewood every day to keep the stove going.''

Happy Birthday Dad!

Patricia Matthews Mar 13, 2010

6 weeks have passed, I'll never forget the night. Peter rang to tell me. That you had gone to Heaven. It was so hard to believe that you were gone. Why did you have to go right now? You were always there for me when I needed you the most. You bought so much joy into my life. You helped me and never let me fall. I think of you every day. You gave me life and you let me live it. I am so proud of you Dad and will always cherish the memories of the times we shared together. It's difficult to let you go, But I am happy for you, For now you are with God in Heaven. I love and miss you so very much. Forever in my heart XXXX
