In 1987 we found ourselves in the same Organic Chemistry Prac at the University of Sydney. (As an aside - I always thought that Franga was very fastidious in cleaning his bench with some of the volatile hydrocarbons and associated fumes on offer!)
The Chemistry Prac started at 11am on Wednesdays and we would spend the first hour setting up so that the experiment would be bubbling away.
Fortunately these often needed a couple of hours to "cook" so we would retire to the Duck and Swan in Chippendale for some lunch and a couple of pints of DogBolter.
This always put us in the right frame of mind to get through the Prac and the 5pm conclusion.
Fortunately we never had any explosions!
Finally, I would like to past on my condolences to the Francis family. Ben and Sean’s eulogy was a fitting tribute.
