A. Heather was an avid sewer. She collected any fabric that took her fancy - it didn't matter how small, as she also made beautiful, unique quilts. After moving from a three-bedroom house - where one of the bedrooms was her sewing room - into a smaller home, she converted the garage into her new sewing room. She had a big table, her sewing machine, and her overlocker - and a tonne of drawers and cabinets in which to stow her stash of material! I liked to buy her fat quarters for quilting and other notions I thought she would like. In the 1980s she made quite a few bride and bridesmaid dresses. Then in 1996 she made a beautiful dress for my sister's wedding - hand sewing pearl-like beads on to segments of lace to sew to the skirt. In 2001 she made a two-piece dress for my own wedding - a purple velvet bodice with a flowy, romantic black skirt. She sewed a matching vest out of the same purple velvet for my husband. If it could be imagined, she could make it. I really wish I had gotten a smidge of her sewing talent! It was something I cherished about her. At home there was no calmer sound than the rattle and hum of her machine.
