About Reg Lindsay

Australian Country Star

Australian country singer Reg Lindsay has died at the age of 79.

Born in Sydney in 1929, Lindsay was the first Australian to play at the Grand Ole Opry, paving the way for Australian country stars like Keith Urban to later take on the USA.

Lindsay`s biggest pop hit was 1970`s `Armstrong`, a number one on the Australian pop chart. The song was written by Kingston Trio member John Stewart and was about the first man on the moon, Neil Armstrong. Stewart died in January this year.

Lindsay was a household name in Australia in the 50s, 60s and 70s with thanks to his television show The Reg Lindsay Country Hour and the more than 500 songs he recorded.

His other major hit was `July, You`re A Woman`.

Reg Lindsay was awarded for Order of Australia in 1989 Queen Elizabeth II for his services to music,

He died of pneumonia in Newcastle yesterday. It was also his birthday.
